XC Meet Awards thor July 28, 2010 (3:01 PM) Curious to see if any of the coaches out there are doing
anything unique with awards for your XC meets. I've grown
tired of the usual medals and trophies that just collect
dust. I know some places give out shirts as well.
We've been kicking around the idea of doing a few Tour de
France like jerseys. This could get expensive quick, but
would be a nice change of pace!
Let the ideas flow.... | | mulp July 28, 2010 (4:09 PM) I think t-shirts are the way to go, I'm not sure how much
medals cost or trophies. But t-shirts printed in bulk aren't
too bad, and I know I enjoyed getting them when I could.
Never got them in HS obviously as we always got medals, but
I think most hs'ers would like that. Especially if you were
one of the few invites to do it.
| thedrys July 29, 2010 (10:00 PM) I agree with Cody, as long as your invite is one of the few
that does it, It would be a really cool deviation from the
norm. I'm not quite sure how a 'jersey' option would work.
I would love to hear your thoughts on that.
| admin July 30, 2010 (12:42 AM) Anything but medals is a great idea. Other than that they
are useless, they also put an emphasis on the individual
rather than the team, which is especially bad given young
high school minds. If you really want to change it up don't
do individual awards at all; save the medals and plaques for
team wins. Then get a list of seniors from the
participating teams that have been on the team throughout
high school. Announce them and give them something cool,
like those arm warmer thingies - View Link
If possible, I would also like the topic of individual
awards to start some sort of disagreement between mulp and
myself or mulp and someone else. I don't think that is too
much to ask.
| the fonz August 1, 2010 (8:14 PM) The reason that awards are usually medals, etc. is that most
things are illegal to give as awards to HS kids. I checked
once on giving shirts - It was against the rules. I called
the union and asked about it. It was several years ago, so
maybe they have changed things. However, there are pretty
specific rules about what you can and cannot give out. I
would make sure you check with the boys/girls union first.
| the fonz August 1, 2010 (8:28 PM) Here is the rule - there is more at the following site:

Page 36/37 area for more details.
Basically - anything other than a medal, a ribbon or a piece
of paper is illegal.
AWARDS RULE
1. Participation in an interscholastic meet or tournament in
a sport sponsored by the IHSAA (football, cross country,
basketball,
bowling, soccer, swimming, wrestling, track, tennis, golf,
baseball).
a. A contestant can receive a customary medal or ribbon from
the host school for competing in a meet or tournament.
b. The student may not receive any other award for his
participation in an interscholastic contest.
c. The student’s own school may award him a trophy, plaque,
cup, unattached letter, monogram, or other insignia of
his
school, provided the award is not in excess of $25 in
value.
d. An outside school organization (civic club, booster club,
a local business, etc.) is only allowed to give an
individual an
inexpensive, unmounted, unframed certificate of recognition.
| admin August 1, 2010 (8:42 PM) Interesting. Could it be a ribbon made out of cotton? And
in the shape and size of a shirt?
| thor August 3, 2010 (1:45 PM) Good thing I coach in Colorado! Baldwin, I think you're on
the right path...I'd be wearing my green participation
ribbon to school all the time!!
| lehmanhatesbaldorf August 5, 2010 (4:35 PM) Personally I like the idea of giving the medals to people at
the end and announcing names like the district meet format.
We did that one year and the coaches of sucky teams were mad
they couldn't just get their results and leave...
| Herb August 6, 2010 (1:45 PM) Some hot chick should give out BJs and then she should be
given a medal.
